A Bikeable Feast

By spokesman | May 4, 2009

A friend of mine has recently began a long bicycle journey as part of her quest to learn about sustainability.  Ibti recently set out from Washington D.C. on a bike ride that will take her all over the country.  She will be stopping at farms and community gardens along the route.  In her own words:

“I plan to hop on my bike and head north, following the growing season in a giant loop around the country, stopping to learn and work at farms and community gardens along the way, cooking for whomever will let me into their kitchens. I imagine this will take about a year, maybe longer. I hope that by learning from and listening to others who are equally passionate and more knowledgeable in matters of local, sustainable agriculture, I, in my small way, can help to tell some of their stories and be a part of the growing consciousness about how the choices we make about the food we grow and buy and prepare for ourselves and those we love matter. “

She is recording her experiences along the way on her blog - A Bikeable Feast.  I have been following her adventures via her blog for two reasons.  First it is very entertaining.  She has a good sense of humor and interesting perspective.  The site features a daily photo so you can get a quick glimpse of the trip.  Secondly, I have always wanted to take off on a similar adventure but I have never done it.  Maybe one day I will; but currently I am living vicariously through Ibti’s adventure.

If you would like to help her out along the way, there are several things that you can do.  If you have a sustainable farm or community garden along the route, let her know.  You can get some publicity for your project and some help from an eager worker.  If you are a cyclist, check in on her site occasionally, and if she winds up in your neck of the woods, please be sure to share any route or campsite information with her.   Lastly, you can always make a donation via a link on her blog.
