Air Force Classic Clarendon Cup
By spokesman | May 31, 2009
The Air Force Classic Clarendon Cup bicycle race was held in Arlington, VA this past Saturday. This is the 12th year for the Clarendon Cup (although the name has changed over the years) and it was one of the best races yet. The race course is a 1 km loop through the streets of Clarendon. The short course and tight turns make for an exciting race. For the Men’s Race, the riders did 100 laps of the course. The winner had an average speed of 27 MPH. The weather was great and there was a large turn-out. In addition to the race on Saturday, the Crystal Ride was held in Crystal City on Sunday. That event include an amateur ride (up to 100K) and a professional criterium on a 12.5 km loop that went through Crystal City, past the Pentagon and the Air Force Memorial. These events get bigger and more popular each year. Congratulations to Arlington Sports for the great job coordinating these events. Special thanks to Miss Virginia for posing at the start/finish line.
Here are the winners of the Men’s Race
1 - Alejando Borrajo (Colavita/Sutter Home)
2- Kenneth Hanson (Team Type 1)
3- Karl Menzies (Ouch/Maxxis)
4 -Dave Tanner (Rock Racing)
5- Zach Bell (Kelly Benefit Strategies)
Congrats to Chad Gerlach (Team Amore & Vita) who was named the Most Aggresive Rider. He led the race for nearly sixty laps and at one point nearly lapped the field. A complete write-up of the 2009 Clarendon Cup Race is on the velonews website. Here is a link to a video with additional pictures.
