Based On the Vuelta Does Astana Need Lance?
By spokesman | September 22, 2008
Team Astana dominated the Vuelta - with Alberto Contador winning the overall race and Levi Leipheimer coming in second. Levi won both time trials. If the Vuelta followed the lead of this year’s Tour De France, and not offered time bonuses, Leipheimer and Contador would have been tied for the lead
Contador earned 58 seconds in bonuses, including 40 seconds in his two stage victories. Leipheimer earned 12 seconds in bonuses, from his second place at Fuentes de Invierno, but didn’t earn any bonuses in his two time trial victories. Without these time bonuses, they would have had the same overall time.
In that case, the tie-breaking procedure is to look at the decimal digits from the time trials. This would have come out in favor of Contador.
The pair also dominated the last Tour De France they rode in 2007. Alberto won and Levi was third. Contador has now won each of the three Grand Tours - the Giro, the Tour De France and the Vuelta joining a distinguished group of champions including Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault.
On this strong team, with two very strong contendors and one who has begun a career where he has the potential to be one greatest cyclists of all time, is there room for Armstrong?
