Before You Do A Charity Ride

By spokesman | May 12, 2009

Before you sign up for a charity ride, it is a good idea to check out the charity.  Seven years ago the Washington Post reported that Pallotta Teamworks, the for-profit group that organized the AIDS rides, had spent 86% of the money raised for the DC AIDS ride on overhead.I recently discovered a website that rates the efficiency of charities.   The site is called CharityNavigator.org.  It rates U.S based non-profits on a scale of zero to four stars.  It doesn’t rate all charities but it does include many that are involved with charity bike rides.  While I understand that there are legitimate costs associated with planning and running an event, the 86% for the AIDS ride was ridiculous.  There were many riders and donors that felt like they were ripped off.
