Bike and Boat Tours In Canada
By spokesman | April 15, 2009

I recently discovered that you can now do a bike tour in Canada via the bike and boat format that is popular in Holland. I did a Bike & Barge Tour in Holland with Van Gogh Tours several year ago. It is a great way to travel. Those bike tours use a boat for the accomodations and are very common in the Netherlands. The boat has cabins on-board that serve as your hotel room. On a typical day, you have breakfast on the boat and then take off on your bike. The boat meets you at a new town in the evening. You have dinner on the boat and then can head into town for some sightseeing, shopping, entertainment or a drink at a pub. Several other countries also have similar tours however until last year there were none in North America.
However Ronald Houde and Anne Perreault did a boat based bike trip in Holland in 2005. They thought it would be great to have similar Bike and Boat tours in Canada where they lived. After several years of planing, there vision became a reality in the summer of 2008. Based on their success last season, they have expanded their tour offerings for the upcoming season. They offer 5 different tours including 2 new tours for 2009.
All of the tours combine biking and river cruising. The ship serves as your Inn for the trip. By having the same accommodations each night you don’t need to pack and unpack every day as on most other bike tours. If you want to skip a day riding, you can remain on the ship. At each overnight stay, you can explore the town.

I participated on one of the tours last year. Our itinerary was from Quebec City to Montreal. It was fantastic!! I never realized or appreciated the enormity of the St. Lawrence River. The ship was extremely comfortable and the meals were 5 star. Every day brought a new adventure with our guide leading us to places I would never have found on our own. Sitting on the sundeck at night or in the lounge it was absolutely amazing, watching the large ocean bound freighters and Great Lake freighters going right by our dining room window. This year I plan on doing the Montreal to Kingston itinerary.
