Blogpreneur Contest Entry - Bicyclespokesman.com
By spokesman | May 8, 2008
This posting is my entry in the BlogPreneur Contest for the Bicyclespokesman blog. I recently took the plunge and began this blog, focusing on an area of interest to me. I thought that by focusing on my hobby of bicycling, it would simplify content creation and marketing. I also looked forward to the interaction with folks who shared my interest in cycling and touring. Although this blog is fairly new and I can’t provide impressive statistics on the number of readers or page-views yet, I am pleased with numerous successes so far. These include feedback and e-mails from all over the world and high rankings in Google for certain keywords. Writing the posts also provides a creative outlet.
Developing and nurturing a successful blog is analogous to winning a bicycle race. In a race such as the Tour De France, many riders begin and their standing is determined by the cumulative time over many stages. The stage each day is very hard and on many days, most of the pack of riders remain even - gaining or losing little time. Each day some riders drop out. The eventual winner gains a time advantage where they can best standout from their rivals - sometimes on a mountain stage or perhaps on an individual time trial. An added dimension of cycling that is unique to the sport is how competitors will work together at times for mutual advantage. For example if two riders from different teams break away from the main pack, they will work together by drafting to maintain their lead over the pack. These aspects of cycling have analogies in world of blogging including:
- Achieving success through a combination of strategy, persistence and hard work.
- Distinguishing yourself from the pack through a series of incremental gains.
- Cooperating with competing bloggers to gain readers and visibility.
It is early in the race for the Bicyclespokeman blog but I intend to keep pedaling.
