Florence By Bike
By spokesman | May 12, 2008

In my recent trip to Italy, I discovered a great bike shop called Florence By Bike (http://www.florencebybike.it/). The shop provides bicycle rentals, maps and support for tourists looking to rent a bike for a day trip or a tour in the Tuscany region. The staff in the shop are very helpful in fitting your bike and assisting in planning your trip. Several of their day trips can be linked to make a self supported tour. The staff can be helpful in planning a multi-day trip including planning a routethat uses a train to return to Florence if you don’t want to do a loop trip. The shop rents a variety of bikes including city bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes and even high end road bikes. In addition to these resources for self supported tourists and day trippers, the shop also provides a one day supported bike tour of the Chianti Region.
On my trip, I stayed in Impruneta - a town outside of Florence. I discovered Florence By Bike when I searched on the internet for a map of the route from Impruneta to Florence. Their directions are very accurate and are written with a cyclist’s perspective - avoiding heavy traffic. Their website has useful information including a list of tour companies (several in Italy) hotels, vineyards and L’eroica.
The picture in this post is the Duomo in Florence, located just a short distance from the bike shop. The construction of the dome of the Duomo was a significant engineering feat and is described in a great book entitled Brunelleschi’s Dome. The dome is large than St. Peter’s in Rome, St. Paul’s in London and the U.S. Capitol dome. In fact it is the largest dome constructed using bricks and mortar. Reading the book will give you a greater appreciation of this historical landmark.
