More Free Bikes For Jimmy Carter

By spokesman | January 27, 2009

It was reported earlier this month that 2 bicycles belonging to former President Jimmy Carter and his wife were stolen from the Carter Center.  The Carters use the bikes to ride around the campus.  The stolen bikes had been given to the Carters in 2007 by a bike shop owner.  In 2007, the Carters had brought their current bikes in for repair.  The shop owner decided the bikes were in such bad shape that he would give the Carters two new bikes.   Those bikes were stolen earlier this month.

Last night, Jimmy Carter was a guest on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  At the end of the interview, Jon Stewart mentioned the stolen bicycles and gave Jimmy Carter two new bikes.

Why does everyone want to give Jimmy Carter a bicycle?  Is it some sort of consolation prize for not getting a second term?

A cover story this months issue of Bicycling Magazine discussed getting a bike the traditional way - buyng it.  The cover teaser said “Five Bikes Under $3000″.    I didn’t know that it was so hard to find a sub-$3000 bike.  However the editors of bicycling magazine know that anyone who is not an ex-president won’t get a bike for free and in these tough economic times most people need to keep the price under $3000.  It is sad to think of all of the uninformed bike consumers paying $4000, $5000 or more for a bicycle when there are perfectly adequate bikes for less than $3000. (who knew?)  Thank goodness those editors are watching out for bike buyers.

I watched a documentary on Carter, and I swear he and his wife were riding around Plains, Georgia on Rivendells! Not exactly cheap, junky bikes… but maybe what they had at the Carter Center was junk… Jimmy Carter rocks…

I have seen pictures of Jimmy Carter on the Rivendell. I think that the bikes at the Carter Center were Specialized Globes. An ex-president should have several bikes.
