Obama Inauguration Bicycle Rip-Off

By spokesman | December 18, 2008

I recently found an ad on Craigslists for an Obama Inauguration bicycle.  The ad read:

“OBAMA 08″ Schwinn 18″ Jaguar 7 Speed Cruiser - Very Nice - $165 (Arlington)

Schwinn Jaguar: Nice 18 Schwinn Aluminum 7 speed Jaguar with grip shifting and a Alivio Shimano Rear Derailleur, Power Brakes, Nice 26 inch Alloy Wheels and 2.25 cruiser tires. Bike is in very good condition - tuned up, clean with a newly replaced rear derailleur. Excellent for cruising, commuting on or off road. I call it the Obama 08 due to decals someone covered the bike in but it looks great and would be awesome to have during the Inauguration!

This is an excellent example of the junk that you can find on Craigslist, I doubt that this bike was worth $165 when it was brand new.  The Obama stickers were probably put on to cover rust and paint chips.  It seems that the election of Obama and the economic downturn have driven people to Craigslist in mass to augment their income.  Other than this bicycle, nearly everyone in the Washington area (extending as far as West Virginia) is trying to rent out their house for the inauguration weekend for an exorbitant price.

In order to put an end to this madness, I am willing to host some people for the inauguration for free.  I don’t want to go the hassle of vacating and renting my house.  You can use my 2 extra bedrooms.  My house is 1 mile from a metro station and the metro ride to downtown takes about 25 minutes.  If you are a reader of this blog, a bicyclist, a student, someone who helped on the campaign, a distant relative of Joe Biden or whatever; and you have an overwhelming desire to see the inauguration, email me and let me know.  If you happen to have extra tickets to an inaugural ball, that would be a plus, but it is not necessary.  I plan to watch the inauguration on TV and avoid the crowds.

You are one really cool dude! With a sense of humor too! he he :)

    Is this for real?

Just wanted to alert you to another FREE resource to list your available rooms. You should check out Viscape - or http://viscape.com - a fully Web 2.0 social travel site for vacation and second homes. You can list for FREE for rent or swap. Its a really hip and friendly community. It also happens to be the 2nd largest resource for inaugural rentals after craigslist.

Good luck! I’d like to hear your story - the people contacting you, etc. We can visit cross promoting, etc.

    Happy holidays!
