A high end boutique cycling studio named Velovoom just opened in my neighborhood. In addition to just spinning on the stationary bike, class participants will do upper body yoga stretches and use light dumbbells while on the bike to make the class an entire body experience. Despite the fact that there are spinning classes at nearly every gym and many bike shops, these new high end studios are popping up everywhere. They are already all over New York and beginning to spread. In addition to Velovoom, there is Soulcycle , Flywheel and Ride The Zone (which was sold to Flywheel last month). These studios are the rage among celebrities. New York Magazine recently published a list of which celebrities attend the different studios.
“All three indoor cycling studios are celebrity magnets, with Ride the Zone counting Alec Baldwin, Jon Bon Jovi and Matthew Broderick among its members, Soul Cycle attracting Tom Cruise, the Olsen twins, Kelly Ripa and Chelsea Clinton, and Flywheel having seen the taut rear ends of Jimmy Fallon, Ivanka Trump, Katie Couric and Kyra Sedgewick on its bikes.” (see New York Magazine link)
This proliferation of spinning studios and celebrity involvement has all of the signs of a fad. Remember all of the rage over rotisserie chicken. There was Boston Chicken, Chicken Out and Kenny Rogers Roasters among others. I predict a similar fate for the spinning studios as for the chicken chains - bankruptcy.
