Shepherdstown West Virginia - C&O Canal Mile 73
By spokesman | June 26, 2008
I spent a weekend earlier this month at Shepherdstown, West Virginia with my girlfriend to celebrate her birthday. Shepherdstown is located at mile 73 on the C&O Canal. We did some bicycling on the C&O Canal towpath to visit Harpers Ferry. When I had ridden the entire length of the canal in the year 2000, my group skipped Shepherdstown, because we had detoured off of the towpath to visit Antietam National Battlefield. I am glad that I got to see Shepherdstown this time and will not skip it again. The town has several excellent Bed and Breakfasts and restaurants. For such a small town, there are a surprising number of very good restaurants. It is an excellent place to send a night during a multi-day canal trip or just a good rest stop for travelers that are passing through. We stayed two nights at the Thomas Shepherd Inn (http://www.thomasshepherdinn.com/). The place was lovely and the multi-course breakfast was great. The Inn keepers; Jeanne Muir and Jim Ford; are great hosts. Their website gives information about the town, restaurant reviews and information on special events in the area.

We celebrated the birthday with dinner on Saturday night at the Press Room. The food was excellent and you get a free cannoli on your birthday. The town has several places with live with music and the Opera House is a theater that shows independent movies.
The town is about 1 mile from the towpath. At mile 72.8 on the canal, there is ramp that brings you up to the Route 34 bridge on Shepherdstown Pike that crosses the Potomac River. From the Canal, you will be able to see the Bavarian Inn on the other side of the river. At the top of the ramp, turn left to cross the bridge and continue about 1 mile to reach East German Street. The Thomas Shepherd Inn is located that intersection. The town is to the left. There is a bicycle shop called Pedal and Paddle about two blocks away on the left. The restaurants on the next few blocks include a tea room, a bakery, a coffee shop, a lunchette (Betty’s Restaurant), pizzarias and a few higher end places (The Press Room and the Yellow Brick Bank Restaurant).
There was a soap box derby race on the Saturday morning that we stayed. As a cyclist, I love any race of non-motorized vehicles. I have some photos and video of the heats and will be posting a video soon.

the C&O is an amazing stretch of land
a failure business wise in its prime
but a glorious national treasure in its aftermath
