The Boulder Velodrome
By spokesman | April 29, 2009
The Boulder Velodrome recently opened in Boulder, Colorado. A time lapse video of the construction of the track is below.
There are currently 24 velodromes in the United States including 2 indoor tracks. Track cycling peaked in the U.S. between 1890 and 1920 when six day races and other track events were held in venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York City.
However track racing is growing in popularity. In addition to the new Boulder Veledrome, there are several others in the early stages of planning including the Fort Collins Velodrome and the Rock Hill South Carolina Velodrome.
In this era of high cost sports venues typically funded by State and Local governments, it is nice to see these velodromes being supported by local grass root movements of avid cyclists. If you live in or travel to one of the cities with a velodrome, be sure to visit and support it.
